SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Birmingham artist Stephen Smith has completed his downtown mural – a panoramic view of the Imerys-Gantts Quarry Observation Site with the message, “Welcome to Sylacauga.”

The new mural is located on the side of Wright-Sprayberry Insurance at the corner of 1st St. and Broadway Ave.

Smith, whose artistic journey began in childhood, brings a rich background in various visual arts. His career includes roles as an illustrator, writer, and cartoonist, and he holds a BFA in painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Smith’s work has been exhibited throughout the country, and he has contributed to numerous commercial and literary projects.

Smith’s wife, from Sylacauga, captured the photograph of the quarry overlook that provided the model for the mural project.

The effort was a collaboration among the Sylacauga Beautification Council, Sylacauga Arts Council, Sylacauga Young Professionals, and the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce.
