SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Birmingham says “This week will be cold” as overnight temperatures will be in the low 20s for most of the area with wind chills several degrees colder. It could dip into the teens by Thursday morning, Jan. 9.
The NWS is also watching the potential for winter weather Thursday night into Friday morning. Specific accumulations still remain uncertain, but locations across the far north may see travel impacts. The expectation for late Thursday into Friday is for a wintry mix of rain, ice, and snow across the northern half of the state.
The graphic is an indication of what is expected, but the Weather Service warns that a two to three degree temperature change in the forecast can mean significant changes one way or the other in the expected impacts. Timing is also a major factor in determining the local impact of Winter weather on travel.
