Municipal Elections on Aug. 26: What You Need To Know

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. — Voters in most Alabama cities, including Sylacauga and Childersburg, will head to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 26, for
municipal elections. Oak Grove will not hold an election this year, as no races were contested.

Key Deadlines:

  • Aug. 11: Last day to register to vote. Registration closes 14 days before an election.
  • Aug. 19: Last day to request an absentee ballot application by mail.
  • Aug. 21: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person.
  • Aug. 25: Final day to request an emergency absentee ballot if eligible. Voters meeting specific criteria — such as required work absence, caregiving for someone needing emergency treatment, or a recent family death — may qualify. This is also the deadline to hand-deliver an absentee ballot.
  • Aug. 26: Election Day. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon.
  • Sept. 23: Runoff election, if needed. A runoff is required if no candidate receives a majority of votes.

Those elected will take office on the first Monday in November.

Voters can register in person at the City Clerk’s office in Sylacauga or Childersburg, or online through the Alabama Secretary of State’s website. Registration status can be checked instantly here.

Alabama law requires voters to present valid photo identification before casting a ballot. Accepted forms of ID include:

  • Alabama driver’s license or non-driver ID
  • Alabama photo voter ID card
  • U.S. passport
  • Government-issued photo ID (state, federal, county, or municipal)
  • Student or employee ID from an Alabama college or university
  • Military ID
  • Tribal ID

Registered voters in Sylacauga will vote at the J. Craig Smith Community Center, 2 W. 8th St. In Childersburg, the designated polling place is the R.S. Limbaugh Community Center, 300 1st St. SE.

Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
