SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Mignon Baptist Church will open its fellowship hall as a warming shelter beginning Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25 in response to frigid temperatures expected across the Sylacauga area.
The shelter announcement was first posted on social media and later confirmed by Sylacauga Mayor Matt Hubbard during Thursday night’s City Council meeting.
The church’s fellowship hall, located in the basement and accessed from the back parking lot, will open at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Doors will be locked at 8:00 p.m.
If no guests arrive by that time, the shelter will close for the night. If guests are present, the shelter is expected to remain open throughout Monday and Monday night, based on current weather forecasts. Conditions will be reevaluated afterward.
The church is seeking donations of snacks, juices, and monetary contributions to assist with food preparation. Portable propane heaters with fuel are also requested in case of power outages, along with volunteers to help staff the shelter.
