CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Lay Lake Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a grant from Homeland Security via a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant program for first responders. The grant will provide $22,142.85 for the department.
As a condition of the grant, Lay Lake Fire will provide a five percent match of $1,107.15, bringing the total investment to $23,250.
These funds will be used to purchase a turnout gear washer and dryer system, designed to safely remove cancer-causing contaminants and other harmful substances from firefighters’ protective gear.
“This purchase gives us access to top-of-the-line equipment we otherwise could not afford, helping keep our firefighters healthier and better protected while serving our community,” said Yancey Brown.
