SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Mrs. Laura McGilberry has been named the new assistant principal of Pinecrest Elementary School as of a special called Sylacauga Board of Education meeting.
McGilberry succeeds Jodi Shaw, who ascended to the role of principal at Pinecrest. This appointment took effect on Monday, July 8.
McGilberry comes into the role of assistant principal after serving as a media specialist and brings with her two decades worth of educational experience. She has been teaching at Pinecrest since August of 2021, where she began teaching fifth grade math and science.
In November 2021, she moved into the position of media specialist at Pinecrest after it was vacated by Dr. Jaclyn Rivers. In this role, she has had the opportunity to serve as the peer helper sponsor, the robotics team sponsor, the math team sponsor, the yearbook designer, grade level lead, and a part of the Title 1 Advisory Board.
McGilberry graduated from Jacksonville State University (JSU) in 2003 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.
McGilberry later completed a Master’s Degree in Media Specialty with a Technology Add-on, also from Jacksonville State University, in 2007.
She began her career teaching third grade at Oxford Elementary School. She then moved to Yarbrough Elementary in Auburn, teaching a year of fourth grade and two years of second grade.
After that, McGilberry moved into the library and spent the next 13 years serving as their librarian and technology coordinator. While serving in that role, she acted as the grade level lead, as well as a member of the school improvement team, literacy committee, and black history committee.
