SYLACAUGA, Ala – Sylacauga Softball won big over Munford in Wednesday’s 5A Area 7 contest at Pinecrest Park with a 12-1 run rule victory.
Munford took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but it did not take the Aggies long to catch up. Senior center-fielder Maddi Ingram hit an RBI single scoring Madison Martin who was put on base after being hit by a pitch. After a McKenzie Merkel base hit, Raegan Wills comes up with a 2 RBI single pushing Ingram and Merkel across the plate to take the lead. Senior right fielder Kaleigh Smith followed with a RBI single scoring Wills and who later came aroudn and scored on a Munford error giving Sylacauga a 5-1 lead after one inning.
The Lady Aggies continued to add runs in the second inning. Leadoff batter Aurielle Turner reached base on an error and scored on a RBI single from Merkel. Wills then added to her RBI total with another single scoring Merkel. Following a walk of Smith, she and Wills scored on another error from the Lions which also put Neeley-Scott Murphree on base. Pitcher Lani Varner pushed Murphree in with a base hit increasing the Aggie lead to 10-1.
In the third inning, Turner once again reached base on an error followed by a base hit from Martin and a walk of Merkel. Raegan Wills records her fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Turner. Martin then scored as a result of Smith and Murphree both being hit by pitches.
The fourth inning saw a few substitutions in the lineup including Ivey Waller and Zoe McLaughlin who both collected back to back base hits.
Leading 12-1 going into the fifth inning, the Aggie defense yielded nothing to Munford in the top half to end the contest with the run-rule victory.
Offensively, the Lady Aggies collected 10 hits, led by Raegan Wills two hits, sacrifice fly, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Lani Varner earned the win in the circle for Sylacauga allowing five hits, striking out four and only walking two as she and the Aggie defense held the Lady Lions to one run.
The Aggies travel to Reeltown on Thursday, April 11 followed by trip to Montevallo on Friday.
