SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Following festivities honoring senior players from Munford, Clay-Central and Sylacauga, the 5A Area 7 softball tournament hosted by the Aggies got underway Tuesday afternoon as Munford took on Clay-Central in game one at Pinecrest Park.
The Volunteers, who split a pair of area contests with Munford earlier in the season, downed the number two seeded Lady Lions with an 11-1 run rule victory.
Game two featured the 5A Area 7 champions, Sylacauga, take on number three seeded Clay-Central. Tied at one a piece after six innings, the Vols regained the lead, 2-1, in the top of the seventh. The Lady Aggies answered back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Kaylei Horn hit a line drive into center field, pushing Lani Varner, who just tripled, across the plate. The Lady Volunteers were able to limit the Aggies to the one run, sending the contest into extra innings.
Clay-Central plated three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-2 advantage and holds the Aggies to one run in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 5-3 victory.
Tournament play continues at Pinecrest Park Wednesday at 5:00 pm when Sylacauga faces off with Munford in the first elimination game. Clay-Central will play the winner of that contest at 7:30 pm.
