SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Parks and Recreation department recently announced on its website that the Sylacauga Karate School will be returning to the J. Craig Smith Community Center.
51 years ago, Sensei Gene Henderson started teaching the form of martial arts through an affiliation with the Yoshukai Karate International at the Sylacauga Parks and Recreation department.
During this period of time, one of Henderson’s students earned his black belt and subsequently opened the Sylacauga Karate School. The individual to achieve this:

Caine, along with current instructor Shihan Daren Holland, bring a wealth of karate knowledge to their students.
The Karate School lists the mental benefits of training as “greater self-discipline, increased focus, improved mental toughness, perseverance, greater respect as well as more confidence, patience, and humility.
On top of making you mentally stronger, karate is considered a total body workout that improves aspects of physical health such as flexibility, stamina, hand-eye coordination, increased strength, and more.
Currently, the Sylacauga Karate School is located at 30 N. Norton Ave. and holds classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
