Inaugural Turkey Ball held for Coosa Valley Healthcare Center residents

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The denizens of the Coosa Valley Healthcare Center put on their best outfits and strutted their stuff at the first-ever Turkey Ball Monday morning.

With a multitude of family and friends in attendance, 36 residents participated in the event. Many of the people working at the nursing home also dressed up for the occasion. In the end, a king and queen were crowned.

The room where the men and women were showcased was decorated with a runway made out of white flower pedals and a silver backdrop was hung for the individuals to stand in front of while a panel of judges asked them questions. These inquiries ranged from “What is your favorite color?” and “Do you like sitting on the porch?” to “Who is your favorite celebrity?” For one gentleman, the answer to that last question was “well, me.”

After much deliberation, the winners were announced. Taking home the title of “Turkey Queen” was Ms. Janice Bennett. Her positive energy and happy-go-lucky attitude overwhelmed the judges.

“I’m so excited,” said Bennett. “I just love all of the people here and this was so fun.”

Mr. Ben Richardson was crowned “King of the Turkey Ball” which in the moment he “couldn’t believe.” He won through his uplifting presence mainly due to his humorous nature. If afforded any opportunity, you just knew he would tell you a joke or two.

Paraphrasing Mr. Richardson, he asked “Why didn’t the turkey eat any food on Thanksgiving? Because he was already stuffed.”
