TALLADEGA, Ala. – Members of Hutton Development LLC addressed the Talladega County Commission Monday evening in an effort to gain its support to move forward on a new shopping center on Highway 280 in Sylacauga.
“We’re excited to deliver an approximately a 170 thousand square foot development to the community,” said Kevin Jennings, development partner with Hutton. The proposed project was approved by the Sylacauga City Council last week by a vote of 3-2 after a public hearing was held. On Monday night, Hutton approached the Commission requesting five mil of the general fund for the next 20 years.
“We are projecting about $26 million in sales, annually,” said Jennings. Hutton projects the project will generate $265 thousand per year in county sales tax collection.
The public-private partnership is expected to create at least 150 jobs. “We think the project could generate well in excess of over 200 jobs,” said Jennings. “We want to underpromise and overdeliver.”
Developers say the traffic from U.S. Highway 280 is an attraction to the property which sits adjacent to Walmart and across from Home Depot.
A public hearing on the project will be held on September 26 at 5:00 p.m. at the Talladega County Courthouse with the commission meeting immediately following.
