Homelessness, mail delivery problems highlight Childersburg City Council session

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council handled their regular meeting business quickly, only to face bigger issues before and after that meeting.

About a dozen citizens spoke on the growing issues of homeless nuisances, citing confrontations, threats, public nudity, criminal littering, and various other public nuisances in large and growing groups at all hours of the day and night.

Mayor Ken Wesson told the crowd that the City is working on drafting a new ordinance that will allow the Police Department to have the legal tools they need to address the problem, saying, “We hope to have it for Council consideration later this week, and hopefully to pass it soon.”

Chief Kevin Koss explained, “If you see something, report it when you see it. Call us, it’s why we’re here. It provides us with what we need to make charges for court.”

During the Town Hall after the meeting, addressing and mail delivery issues for the new College Park subdivision were again discussed.

“I had phone conversations this morning anticipating this,” said Mayor Wesson. “Postal Service officials cannot seem to get on the same page with Congressman Rogers’ office to even set a meeting to resolve all the problems this causes. It seems to us that it could be, and should be, resolved as easily as it was created with a keyboard stroke somewhere in Mississippi. We’ll keep pushing.”

In New Business, the Council approved Resolution 2026-01, which authorizes the Mayor to dispose of surplus gymnastics items no longer needed for public use.

Councilman Wesley Allen read a Proclamation declaring January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness month, affirming the City’s commitment to awareness.

The Council approved elected officials attending mandatory 2026 Certified Municipal Official Regional Training – one day sessions at one of five available locations across the state.

Approval was given to advertise with Childersburg High School Soccer to include a field sign and media promotions in the amount of $300 from Fund 23.

The Council appointed James Roethler to serve on the Library Board for a term ending on Oct. 1, 2029.

Approval was given to purchase a set of new tables and chairs for the R.S. Limbaugh Community Center, made at the request of the Greater Coosa Valley Chamber of Commerce. The cost will be $4,000.

The Council approved payment of invoices in the amount of $301,337.82.

The next regular meeting of the Childersburg City Council will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 11:00 a.m.
