ASHLAND, Ala. – Loren Daniel Bunner today pleaded guilty in Clay County Circuit Court to the murder of Jolee Nicole Callan and was sentenced to serve 52 years in prison and pay $9,255.92 in restitution to the Alabama Crime Victims Commission.
On August 20, 2015, then-20-year-old Bunner of Shelby County lured his ex-girlfriend, 18-year-old Jolee Callan, to the Pinhoti Trail area of Mount Cheaha where he shot her twice in the head before throwing her body off a 40-foot cliff. Bonner later told law enforcement that the two had a suicide pact but that he couldn’t follow through.
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office assisted the Clay County District Attorney in resolving the case. The sentence includes 10 years for the use of a firearm in the commission of murder.
“This senseless and selfish crime has been a terrible loss to the family and friends of Jolee and a loss to the community as a whole,” said District Attorney Jeffrey Willis.
“We have all been struck by the loss suffered by the Callan family, and after today’s guilty plea and sentence of the defendant we hope that their healing can finally begin,” added Attorney General Steve Marshall.
