Government offices, schools in East Central Alabama to close in preparation for Irma

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Many government offices will be closed Monday including those in Barbour, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Coffee, Coosa, Dale, Elmore, Etowah, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Russell, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and any other county hereafter placed under a Tropical Storm Warning by the National Weather Service.

Sylacauga and Talladega, Clay, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Shelby County schools will also be closed. Other planned events may have been postponed.

The Community Links Program at Coosa Valley Medical Center is also cancelled.

If you are out driving, keep your eyes open for work crews and safety officials and obey all traffic instructions. Once Irma passes, ALDOT will transition to help evacuees, who are expected to leave the state to return home at the same time, which will lead to traffic congestion.

RadioAlabama will continue to provide local updates. Check algotraffic.com for statewide traffic status plus governor.alabama.gov/irma and ema.alabama.gov for additional info.

Especially if you are visiting the area and may have forgotten or run out of medicine, we note that Gov. Ivey, as part of her State of Emergency declaration, directed that Alabama pharmacists use their own good judgment in refilling prescriptions for non-controlled medications. The Governor’s proclamation notes that Hurricane Irma “poses conditions of disaster and extreme peril” to both Alabamians and those evacuating into Alabama from other states; that many displaced individuals may not have ready access to their medications, prescriptions, and insurance records; and that pharmacists may also have difficulty obtaining the usual refill authorizations.
