SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Today is National Donut Day in the United States of America. Residents of Sylacauga no longer have to drive to Birmingham to celebrate this year.
According to Holiday Insights, National Donut Day occurs on the first Friday of June very year. It began in 1938 during the Great Depression as a fundraiser and a way to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I. Lassies were sent to the front lines of Europe to deliver food and a morale boost to the troops, who were often called “doughboys.”
According to the Donut Book, more than 10 billion donuts are consumed by Americans each year.
Sylacauga residents would usually have to travel to Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts to celebrate, but not anymore. Daylight Donuts opened just in time for National Donut Day.
Daylight Donuts finally opened its doors last Friday, May 25 after it announced it would be coming to Sylacauga in January.
The owner, Bunnat “Bunny” Heng, owns the Daylight Donuts in Alexander City, as well. The Alexander City location opened around five years ago, and Bunny decided to open a location in Sylacauga after having success with his first store.
So far, Daylight Donuts in Sylacauga is having great success since their opening less than a week ago. Donuts are made fresh daily, and there are many options to choose from. The donuts are baked first before they are fried, which gives the unique taste and texture.
