SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Cities throughout Alabama are getting ready for the 18th annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, starting this Friday, July 21, at 12:01 a.m. and ending Sunday, July 23, at midnight.
The weekend-long period allows shoppers to purchase school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales tax. Local sales tax may still apply.
Eligible clothing items must be $100 or less per article, including school uniforms, shirts, pants, shoes, and more.
Computers and computer software are eligible for tax exemption if the total purchase is $750 or less. However, recreational devices and video games are not eligible.
School supplies and instructional material under $50 per item, such as notebooks, pencils, and art supplies, are included in the tax holiday. Books priced at $30 or less per book are also tax-exempt.
Retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on eligible items during the sales tax holiday.
