CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – Every year, the Mayor and City Council of Childersburg select an individual for special recognition for their service to the city. The “2024 Heart of Childersburg Award” went to a couple instead, Gaye and Monty Powell.
For years, Monty Powell has been involved in so many aspects of life in Childersburg, especially the Historic Preservation Commission and its properties, the Butler-Harris-Rainwater House and the Kymulga Grist Mill Park.
“Monty has been instrumental in so many ways, helping secure grants and making improvements, making our city’s assets even stronger,” said Mayor Ken Wesson. “For him to bring Gaye to our city was just icing on the cake. She has jumped right in, putting her own stamp on our city.”
“For Monty and I to be the recipients of such a special award means so much. For me, it was such an unexpected honor. I found myself overcome with emotion, and the tears were hard to hold back. I feel so fortunate to have met so many wonderful people who share our love for this wonderful town,” said Gaye Powell.
Her other half added, “What a surprise and honor to be this year’s Heart of Childersburg award winners. I am especially proud of Gaye Powell and how much she has contributed to and continues to contribute to so many activities to promote Childersburg. She started pitching in to civic activities almost immediately after moving here to become my bride.”
