FAYETTEVILLE, Ala. – Fayetteville High School (FHS) honored veterans at its annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 8, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The ceremony celebrated veterans from all military branches with a range of tributes and presentations.
The event opened with a welcome and the presentation of both the United States and Alabama flags, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Eli Thornton then played a rendition of the national anthem on electric guitar, followed by the Howling Hub, which spelled out “Thank You to the Veterans,” and a flag-folding ceremony ensued.
An honor walk was performed by kids consisting of all the classes at Fayetteville Elementary.
The Fayetteville High School band then performed “Portrait of a Patriot” by Anthony Susi, and the POW flag and wreath were presented.
Flags from each branch — Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard — were displayed, and then remarks from featured speaker, Sgt. Major James Michael Oakley, U.S. Army (Ret.), moved those in attendance. The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence and a rendition of “Taps” by Robert Price.
Following the program, veterans were treated to a meal catered by Hickory Street Cafe. The event was sponsored by the Fayetteville Future Business Leaders of America, led by FBLA sponsor Ms. Linda Terry.
“It’s just a heartwarming thing to see my students and the gratitude and excitement they have to get ready for the program,” said Terry. “They understand the sacrifices the veterans have made, and they want to honor them.”
