Former NBA star Gerald Wallace honored with a mural inside the R.S. Limbaugh Community Center gym

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Parks and Recreation Department wanted to both recognize a local sports celebrity, NBA veteran Gerald Wallace, and have his story serve as an inspiration for those who participate in their basketball program.

Artist Jan Schablow Roberts was commissioned to paint a mural on the wall of the community center gymnasium, featuring Wallace as a young member of his 9-year-old rec center team – the Bullets – along with a painting featuring his time in the NBA.

“We wanted to remember where that great journey began, right here where he played his first organized ball,” said Mayor Ken Wesson. “We had to be a little sneaky to keep him from knowing as it was being created, and then to lure him down here to debut the mural among family and friends.”
