[WATCH] Former Alabama QB Andrew Zow named Sylacauga football coach

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – After a month-long search, Sylacauga City Schools has hired Andrew Zow, a former quarterback at the University of Alabama in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as the new head football coach of the Aggie program.

The Sylacauga City School board voted to approve Superintendent Dr. Jon Segars recommendation on Monday at a called board meeting. Sylacauga will be Zow’s fifth stop as a high school head coach.

Zow previously coached at his high school alma mater, Union County in Florida, for three seasons (2007-09). Zow then returned to Alabama and served as an assistant at Oak Mountain, before being hired the head coach for Montevallo (2012-15). In 2015, Zow was named 4A coach of the year after finishing 9-3 before heading to Calera.

When Zow began his tenure at Calera (2016-18), the Eagles were in class 5A, and Zow fared very well. Calera finished 2016 and 2017 with a combined 15-9 record and two playoff victories. In 2018, Calera jumped to one of the most difficult regions in class 6A and it showed as Zow’s squad finished 1-9.

In June 2019, Zow left to take the same position at Bessemer City after the school fired its previous coach for conducting illegal practices. Those practices led to probation being slapped on the program by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Zow coached one season at Bessemer City, leading the Purple Tigers to an 8-3 record and a postseason appearance.
