WEOGUFKA, Ala. – There’s a pair of Saturday, Dec. 13 events at Flagg Mountain near Weogufka this weekend. First, there’s a a gathering of Friends of Flagg just after 12:00 p.m. and a huge meteor shower viewing after dark.
You can come for one or the other, stay for both, and even pitch a tent and spend the night at the Tower. Bring your favorite dish for a potluck dinner at 12:30 p.m., hang out with friends and enjoy some music, and after dark, there’ll be a viewing of the Geminid meteor shower.
The “shower of stars” peaks on the night of the 13th for one of the strongest meteor showers of the year, with a peak of potentially 120 to 150 meteors per hour. Viewing conditions should be excellent with the new moon, good for dark sky viewing. The best time is expected to be after 10:00 p.m. and on into the night, looking toward the Gemini constellation.
Bring your tents and chairs, and there will be an option to camp at the Tower for the night of Dec. 13 at the rate of $10 per person or tent.
The gate to drive to the Tower will be locked at the usual times – 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. – with normal quiet hours of 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
