MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sylacauga is the first team on deck with Winterboro, Fayetteville, and B.B. Comer all following later to represent South Talladega County at regionals today.
SYLACAUGA
Anna B. Shaw serves first for Sylacauga, and we are underway!
Sylacauga drops their first game to UMS-Wright, 25-13. The Harshberger twins, Catherine Price, and eighth-grader Bianca Hall played well for the Aggies in the first set.
The Aggies are mounting a tougher challenge in the second set with the score tied at 7-7.
UMS-Wright is pulling away. Coach Randie Roberts takes a timeout with the score favoring the Bulldogs at 20-11.
The Bulldogs take the second set, 25-14. The Aggies now need to win three straight sets to stay alive in Montgomery.
Six consecutive points from UMS-Wright forces Coach Roberts into a quick timeout to begin the third set.
Senior outside hitter Ja’Niya Garrett provides a much-needed spark for the Aggies as they storm back into the third set with the score now 9-7.
Another big run from the Bulldogs has UMS-Wright needing just seven points to take the match. The score is now 18-8.
Sylacauga’s strong season comes to a close as UMS-Wright seals the victory, taking set three by a tally of 25-10.
“We had some great hustle plays, we had some great moments,” said Coach Roberts after the match. “I have a great group of seniors, all eight of them. They have so much passion for this program, and they have given so much throughout their time here. We have the best support staff and student section. I’m very thankful for all of the support. This is an amazing program.”
WINTERBORO
Millry to serve and get the first point as Winterboro takes the court here in Montgomery.
The Bulldogs’ Kailynn Williams sends a creative return spike to Millry’s side for an early 3-1 lead in the first set.
Early timeout for Millry as Winterboro leads 9-4.
Winterboro has had control for most of this set, but a brief run by Millry brings it within three. The Bulldogs take a timeout, leading 16-13.
Back and forth we go! Bulldogs with another timeout, still leading by three, with the score 21-18.
An impressive spike by Kennadi Merritt followed by an ace from Jashiya Bolton clinches set one for Winterboro, 25-18.
Millry climbs back to take the second set, 25-21. It’s all tied up!
The momentum is rolling for the Wildcats from Millry. Up 12-6 in the third set, Winterboro calls timeout to try and slow them down.
Four points scored, and they’re all for the Wildcats. Another timeout, Bulldogs trailing 16-6.
Millry takes set three, 25-10. The Wildcats now lead in sets, 2-1. Winterboro’s season is now on the line.
Down 6-3, Winterboro takes a timeout, and it worked out pretty well for the Bulldogs. An 8-2 point swing after the timeout puts Winterboro in front, 11-8.
We’ve got plenty of timeouts in Montgomery! Millry takes one to regroup down four, and now Winterboro takes another with just a one point lead, the score 14-13.
Bulldogs use their final timeout down 19-16.
Millry secures victory, taking down Winterboro in four sets. The score in the fourth set was 25-17.
“The game against Millry was tough,” said Coach Townsend. “We made more mistakes than we should have, and that’s what cost us. I’ve been the head coach for four years. This is the best season we’ve ever had. I have five seniors, and all of them have contributed to make this a very successful year.”
FAYETTEVILLE
With Winterboro still playing, Fayetteville takes the opposite court to begin their match against Leroy.
The action is fast-paced at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex! Leroy takes a timeout, trailing Fayetteville 14-10 in set number one.
Only needing one point to take the first set, Fayetteville calls timeout, leading 24-22.
The commanding net play of Kenleigh McArthur along with Fayetteville’s stellar traveling student section willed the Wolves to a 25-22 set one win.
The Wolves in control again as the Bears take a timeout down 11-8 in the second set.
The surging Bears take a 15-14 lead, forcing a Fayetteville timeout.
All tied up at 22 in the as Leroy calls a second timeout of the second set.
McArthur fakes out a Leroy blocker to sea the deal at win set two, 25-23. Down 18-14, Fayetteville outscored the Bears 11-5 down the stretch to take the set.
Nonstop action in the third set before a late timeout by Fayetteville, up 22-19. The Wolves need just three more points to advance to the next round.
Wolves win! A 25-20 win in set three means a sweep for Fayetteville over Leroy. The Wolves will now face the winner of Kinston and Verbena.
“We played well against Leroy,” said Head Coach Ginger McArthur, “and it was great to come to Montgomery for the third time in four years and finally get a win. Aubrey Burns got hurt today. She twisted her ankle. We’ll rest her for the day because she has a college tryout coming soon. Kenleigh played well today. She had ten serves with one ace and fifteen kills. Taylor Hammonds came in today for Aubrey and gave us a lift today when we really needed it. Each round here gets harder and harder, so our next game is sure to be tougher.”
Fayetteville now underway in Round Two against Kinston with a State Championship spot on the line!
The Wolves take set one over Kinston, 25-19.
Fayetteville is just one set away from going to the State Tournament after a 25-18 set two win over the Bulldogs.
Kinston staves off elimination with a thrilling 26-24 set three victory to stay alive at regionals. On to set four!
The Bulldogs have tied things up at two-all in sets after taking set four 25-18 over Fayetteville.
A fantastic run for Fayetteville in the postseason comes to a close after a 15-9, fifth set loss to Kinston.
B.B. COMER
About to get underway with our final first-round match of the day, B.B. Comer versus Mobile Christian!
Mobile Christian rolls in the first set over Comer, 25-9.
Comer is finding it tough today, calling a timeout down 14-2 in the second set.
The Leopards take set two, 25-5.
A repeat of 25-5 takes place in set three, ending B.B. Comer’s season.
