SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Local law enforcement was dispatched to fatal motor vehicle accident involving an 18-wheeler late Tuesday night.
The crash, which happened on Sylacauga-Fayetteville Hwy. outside the Sylacauga Industrial Park, left one dead and another critically injured.
The fatally injured victim, 16-year-old Shawn Potts, was a passenger in the vehicle which collided with the 18-wheeler. Potts, a rising senior at Fayetteville High School, was taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center just after midnight Wednesday where he later passed away.
According to Potts’ stepfather, Robert Lindenthaler, the man driving Potts was ejected from the vehicle. SylacaugaNews.com has learned that the driver is at UAB Hospital in critical but stable condition.
Lindenthaler told SylacaugaNews.com his family was not given any additional information by authorities pertaining to what caused the accident. Potts’ father, Edward Potts, said Radney-Smith Funeral Home will handle funeral arrangements, but no date has been set at this time.
SylacaugaNews.com attempted to get a statement from the trucking company but received no response.
