SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Dr. Emily McInnis, an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) at Coosa Valley Medical Center, has been awarded the 2024 Preceptor of the Year award for Central Alabama by the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM).
McInnis has been a preceptor since 2022, providing supervision and practical training to medical students.
The award was presented by Jonathan Howell, Executive Director of Clinical Resources at ACOM, during a ceremony attended by colleagues, students, and family members.

“These nominations come directly from students, and it speaks volumes about Dr. McInnis’s dedication and impact,” said Howell.
McInnis expressed to SylacaugaNews.com how surprised she was upon receiving the award.
“I wasn’t really expecting it. It’s a huge honor that my students have enjoyed their time with me and learned something,” McInnis said. She acknowledged the importance of her role, noting, “I love my job. I feel like it’s full circle because I was a medical student once. Everyone has to start somewhere, and you have to have preceptors willing to teach you.”
Reflecting on her two-and-a-half years as a preceptor, McInnis added, “I usually have three or four students a year, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of them. They all teach me something.”
Dr. Mamoun Pacha, a urologist and colleague at CVMC, praised McInnis’s work, saying, “Dr. McInnis has done a great job teaching and motivating the students.”
McInnis expressed interest in continuing her work with ACOM, possibly taking on more educational roles in the future. She also shouted out her husband Ryan for his support, allowing Dr. McInnis to balance her professional and personal life to help achieve this level of success.
