COVID-19 numbers in Alabama on the rise after Christmas holiday; Talladega County remains moderate risk


SYLACAUGA, Ala. – COVID-19 numbers are steadily increasing in the state of Alabama following the Christmas holiday.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 risk indicator, there is a moderate amount of COVID-19 activity in Talladega County placing it in the ‘yellow’ category.

Talladega County is currently reporting 5,053 positive COVID-19 cases.  A total of 609 cases have been confirmed just in the last two weeks. Talladega County has reported a total of 74 deaths due to COVID-19.

The state of Alabama alone is currently reporting 351,804 positive COVID-19 cases. A total of 50,954 cases have been confirmed in the last two weeks. Alabama has recorded 4,737 deaths due to COVID-19.

According to healthcare officials, a large portion of positive cases are being reported among individuals 25-49 years of age. The number of positive cases and hospitalizations are expected to rise following the Christmas and New Year holidays.

There are currently 32,999 total hospitalizations across the state.

Alabama is under a mask ordinance until Jan. 22  to help slow the spread of the virus.

If you plan on going out and celebrating the New Year, take precaution and follow healthcare guidelines to keep others, as well as yourself safe from the virus. Remember to wash your hands, wear masks in public, keep your hands away from your face, and continue to practice six-feet social distancing.
