Coosa County volunteer fireman dies in crash while responding to call

COOSA COUNTY, Ala. – A Coosa County volunteer fireman was killed on a crash on the way to a service call on Friday afternoon.

According to Alabama State Troopers, Michael Wayne Johnston, 45, was killed when the 2004 GMC tanker he was driving left the roadway and struck an embankment before overturning. Johnston was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnston was a member of the Equality Volunteer Fire Dept. The crash occurred on Coosa County 14 near Coosa County 10, approximately eight miles west of Equality.

The Coosa County Sheriff’s Office first responded to the scene before investigation was turned over to Alabama State Troopers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Johnson. The Coosa County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Mr. Johnston for his service to the residents of Coosa County,” said Sheriff Michael Howell.
