SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Charles Merry Christmas, Sr. will return to Sylacauga the weekend of December 29-30.

Christmas will preach at Mignon Baptist on Sunday, Dec. 30. Charles, his wife Louise, and two children, Joy Carol and Charles, Jr. (known as “Boonie”) were residents of Sylacauga from 1957 to 1967.

Christmas believed Sylacauga was the best of all places to raise a family because of the wonderful churches, schools, medical facilities, recreational programs, athletic programs, civic organizations, the excellent spirit of community and the support of Avondale Mills. Joy Carol was one of the fifteen members of Coach Lenette Calvin’s High School Gymnastic team that won the first National Girls High School Gymnastic Championship. Charles, Jr. was an eleven-year-old member of Sylacauga’s Little League all-star team that won the State Championship.

“Sylacauga was the only home town our children ever knew and our children have nothing but the most pleasant memories,” said Christmas.

The last Sunday in December is Charles’s 61st anniversary of being called to pastor Mignon Baptist Church. Other December anniversaries for Christmas include being ordained as a pastor 72 years ago. Also, it commemorated his 71st wedding anniversary on Dec. 19. Soon, he will have his 92nd birthday.

He said he chose the setting of Sylacauga for a deeply personal celebration of thanksgiving for the past and for personal renewal and a renewed commitment to God’s faith ventures for the future in his life and ministry.

Joy Carol and her husband, Joe Sanders, will accompany Christmas to Sylacauga. The family resides in Memphis, Tenn. where Charles is the full-time resident Chaplain/Pastor of the 145-apartment Lutheran Village for Senior Adult Independent Living. He is also the Outreach Leader for the most senior adult men of Bartlett Baptist Church. Charles, Jr. lives in Kansas City, MO.

Pastor Rick Deerman of Mignon Baptist has invited Brother Christmas to preach in Morning Worship. Joy Carol will serve at the key board and Jerry Lewis will serve as Worship Leader.

The morning message will not include any reminiscing about the past but will instead look to the future. The sermon is titled “God is God of Today and Tomorrow.”
