CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – Hours after a teammate signed a scholarship to continue his fishing career at the collegiate level, Childersburg High School senior Tyler Pope had his own moment to celebrate on Monday, May 11, officially signing with Jackson State Community College in Tennessee to play baseball.

Pope, a mainstay in the Tigers’ lineup, will join the Green Jays, members of the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association, this fall.

The opportunity represents the culmination of years of development within the Childersburg program, where Pope credits both of his head coaches for helping shape his path to the next level.

“Coach Craven put me out there my freshman year, throwing me into the fire. It did nothing but help me and shape me into who I am today… Coach Donahoo’s my ride or die. He always believed in me and had my best interests in mind and has helped me tremendously in life.”

Pope played his freshman season under Taylor Craven before spending the next three years with head coach Will Donahoo, who took over the program during Pope’s sophomore year. That stretch, Donahoo said, revealed as much about Pope’s leadership as his ability on the field.

“I told Pope I needed his help with a player-led program. He took that as a sophomore and ran with it. It was his team from there on out.”

That presence has not gone unnoticed at the next level. Jackson State assistant coach Martin Beall pointed to Pope’s work ethic and maturity as traits that should translate quickly.

“He’s a hard worker whose leadership skills as a freshman will help us right away.”

On the field, Pope projects as a middle infielder with time expected at second base or shortstop. But as he made clear Monday, he is not focused on locking into one role.

“I’ll go wherever coach tells me to go and make an impact. I’m going to be ready to play, put on cleats, and go out there and give 100 percent every day, all day.”

With the ceremony behind him, Pope now turns his attention to the next chapter. In a few short months, the blue and white of Childersburg will give way to green and yellow as he suits up for Jackson State, with the Green Jays set to open their season in September.
