Childersburg selects new residential garbage vendor

SHARE NOW

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – At its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday night, the Childersburg City Council awarded its residential solid waste collection and disposal service contract to GFL Environmental of Alpine.

GFL will begin weekly pickup on June 1, 2021, under a three-year agreement.

Childersburg’s previous garbage service was based upon the availability of inmate labor. Inmate labor was $15/day per inmate. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City was no longer able to hire inmates with the expectation that the state would not allow the city to hire them again. Since then, the street and sanitation department has hired over 31 employees since the beginning of March 2020 with only five employees remaining. The level of turnover has made it nearly impossible to keep the quality of service for residents at an acceptable level.

Residential service will be $18.81 per month billed through Childersburg Utilities. Each resident will receive one 95 gallon cart. Additional carts can be purchased for an additional $5 per month.

Here is a list of services and guidelines for the new contract.

  • Cart must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection. All household trash must be bagged and placed inside the cart.
  • Handicapped Trash Collection – Backdoor service is available to those who cannot physically get their cart to the street. Contact City Hall if this is a service you require.
  • Bulk waste consists of Furniture and Appliances. Yard waste consist of flowers, bagged grass clippings, bagged leaves, brush, and tree limbs. Limbs should be cut down to 6 foot in length and no more than 16 inches in diameter.
  • Unacceptable waste of any material which by reason of its composition characteristics or quantity is hazardous waste as defined in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976, 42 U.S.C. 6901 et al. and the regulations thereunder or any material which by reason of its composition or characteristics is hazardous waste, a hazardous substance, or hazardous material.
  • Explosive materials, corrosive materials, pathological waste, radioactive materials, cesspool and other human waste, human remains, motor vehicles, batteries, gasoline tanks, gas cylinders, asbestos insulation, closed metal containers, barrels, more than an incidental amount of tires, refrigerators that have not been properly evacuated of the freon, liquid waste including chemical wastes, sewage and other highly diluted water carried materials or substances and those in gaseous forms, special nuclear, or by product materials within the meaning of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954.

Anyone with questions about the new garbage collection contract should contact GFL Environmental directly at 256-378-6878.
