CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – Prior to the Tuesday, April 15 Childersburg City Council meeting, Mayor Ken Wesson announced that he and Childersburg and Talladega County Industrial Development representatives have obtained $930,000 in Industrial Access funds from ADECA. The money is to extend – by 3,000 feet – finished 1st Rd. access to Cooper Steel and Blair Block sites in the Industrial Park for workforce expansions, a stipulation of the granting of those funds.
Cooper Steel will add an 80,000-square-foot new process line, along with a shipping and receiving facility. They will add 50 to 55 new direct hires, along with another 35 new indirect employees. Blair Block will add a second shift that will expand their workforce by 25 to 30 news jobs, with more possible in the future.
The Childersburg City Council opened their regular meeting with a proclamation honoring the 23 years of dedicated service of Lt. Donald Elkins to the Childersburg Police Department. The Council followed with another proclamation designating April as Fair Housing Month in the City.
The Council approved an advertisement in the Daily Home’s Graduation magazine, a quarter-page ad for $236, paid from Fund 23.
Approval was given for Yarnell Construction to conduct maintenance repairs to remove old restrooms and modify for storage in the R.S. Limbaugh Community Center. The project cost will not exceed $7,600 from Direct Support Fund 65, from donated funds.
The Council approved payment invoices in the amount of $588,311.60, including a $248,000 payment for the Judicial/ Police Complex project on Hwy 280.
In other project news, Wesson reported that a meeting with Griffin Creek officials went well.
“They expect the first round of new home construction across from Childersburg High School to be ready for occupancy by September or October. The development will include a total of 63 new homes.”
The next regular meeting of the Childersburg City Council will be held on Tuesday, May 6 at 6:00 p.m.
