CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Police Department is accepting applications for its second Citizens Police Academy, a program designed to use education to help create a better understanding between residents and the police department.
“We learned a lot from the first session and made what we feel are some improvements to the format,” Childersburg Police Chief Kevin Koss said. “Our goal is to offer citizens first-hand insights into how officers perform their duties in service to the community. The academy will promote a stronger relationship between the police and the community.”
The program will consist of seven sessions covering basic information about the department and providing insight into its operations, from patrol and investigations to evidence gathering.
The weekly Thursday evening sessions will cover fingerprinting; firearms and safety; traffic collisions and traffic stops; search and seizure guidelines; foundations of law; CPR and first aid; crime scene investigation and photography; and a K-9 demonstration.
“We hope this program can build mutual trust and improve communication between the police and members of the community, helping bridge gaps and dispel misconceptions,” Chief Koss said. “We want informed citizens equipped to contribute to community safety initiatives, such as neighborhood watch programs and the ‘See It, Say It’ campaign.”
