CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Police Department has announced that it is now accepting applications for its initial “Citizens Police Academy” as a tool to use education effectively to gain better understanding between citizens and First Responders.
“We’ve been working on the format and guidelines for a while now,” said Childersburg Police Chief Kevin Koss. “Our goal is to offer citizens insights into how First Responders perform their duties in service to the community. The academy will promote a stronger relationship between the police and fire department’s First Responders and the community.”
The program will include seven sessions that will outline basic information about the department and delve into the operation of the department – from patrol to investigations to evidence gathering.
There’ll be a session featuring the fire and emergency medical services department, complete with several hands-on activities. Another involves firearms training and safety, including another hands-on activity at the law enforcement firing range.
From the perspective of the Childersburg First Responders, they’re looking for improved public perception and community support. Feedback from the community is also a key element, as well as creating a network of engaged citizens who can assist in promoting public safety, and maybe even help officer recruitment efforts.
For the community, there’s an enhanced understanding that will come from gaining insights into police operation, policies, and challenges, fostering a deeper understanding of how law enforcement works.
“We hope these programs can build a mutual trust and improve communication between the police and members of the community, helping bridge gaps and dispel misconceptions,” explained Chief Koss. “We want informed citizens equipped to contribute to community safety initiatives, such as neighborhood watch programs and ‘See It, Say It’ campaigns.
