Childersburg Lady Tigers capture third straight area championship in softball

SHARE NOW

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – For three years running, the Childersburg Tigers softball team have claimed the area championship and move into regional play with a lot of momentum.

With Tarrant and Indian Springs coming to Della Whitworth Field in Childersburg on Saturday, both teams had to think that their mountain to climb was going to be almost impossible.

Indian Springs defeated Tarrant to begin things and then they took on Coach Terrie Sprayberry’s Tigers, who were regular season champs, and hosts of the tournament.

The first contest with Indian Springs saw the Lady Tigers score early and often and never looked back.

In two and a half innings of play, the ladies in blue scored 24 runs and held their opponents to only 1 run. Great defense, timely hitting, and running the base paths sent Indian Springs to the losers bracket to face Tarrant again.

Once again, Indian Springs would defeat Tarrant and have the dubious task of taking on the Lady Tigers another time.

Their second attempt was no more successful than the first.

A perfect defensive top half of the first inning for Childersburg sent the Lady Tigers to the plate again. Just like the first time, it got ugly real quick with the home team scoring 14 runs in their first at bat.

The Lady Tigers would cruise to a 23-0 victory for the third straight championship for the Cats.

Coach Terrie Sprayberry said, “I’m very proud of all the girls and the hard work that they have put in to get to this point. Even though we went undefeated in area play in the regular season, you still have to make the plays, and they did today.”

Six Lady Tigers found themselves on the All-Tournament Team. Pictured from left to right, they are:

The Lady Tigers will now travel to Lagoon Park in Montgomery to play in the regional tournament on Tuesday, May 9, at 12:45 p.m.
