Childersburg Council makes a pair of dramatic changes

SHARE NOW

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council made votes on their police service area and medical insurance contributions for employees, among other decisions during the Tuesday, Sept. 17 regular meeting.

A “Nay” vote during the last meeting postponed a decision on scaling back the area covered by the Childersburg Police Department, but that decision was made this time around.

By a 4-1 vote, the Council decided to eliminate police services outside the City’s corporate city limits with passage of Ordinance #1146, with Councilman Brandon Robinson casting the dissenting vote.

“This means that our department will no longer perform regular patrols of areas outside our city limits,” explained Mayor Ken Wesson. “What it does not do is change our mutual aid agreements with the county, nor any of our neighboring jurisdictions. We just won’t be the first called by E-911 outside the city limits.”

The subject arose after the State of Alabama restricted the ability of municipal governments to levy taxes in their police jurisdiction to pay for services rendered to those areas. Also not affected by the decision are services provided by the Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department.

In what Mayor Wesson and Council members called a major step forward in support of city employees, Resolution 2024-18 was approved, moving the city contribution to medical insurance coverage from the previous 65 percent to 85 percent, leaving employees to cover only the remaining 15 percent of insurance costs via payroll deductions. It applies to both individual coverage as well as family coverage.

In other business, the Council approved Resolution 2024-16, which changes the language as requested by Talladega County for a nuisance abatement order issued for 91 Killough Dr. for a $945.78 lien for abatement work on the property.

Approval was given to Resolution 2024-17, which amends action from the last meeting. A two-wheel-drive vehicle ordered from Stivers Ford from the state bid list was not available. The order was replaced with a 2025 four-wheel-drive Ford Explorer for use by the Childersburg Fire Department at a cost of $38,249.

A request from the Childersburg Police Department was approved to purchase a pair of computers and printers for new patrol vehicles from TSA, Inc at a cost of $5,694.34, to be reimbursed from an ADECA grant award.

Approval was granted for Kenneth Phillips to attend Alabama Fire College training at a cost of $900.

Municipal Court sessions for the remainder of the calendar year have been moved to the RS Limbaugh Community Center. The court dates are Sept. 25, Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11.

The Council approved payment of a total of $15,420 in various repairs to the Childersburg Senior Center.

Payment of invoices were approved in the amount of $414,159.15.

The next regular Childersburg City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1.
