Childersburg City Council meeting report – Sept. 4, 2018

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council met at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4th.

The following actions were taken:

Resolution 2018-16 was approved, awarding a bid on Senior Center building to Smith’s Roofing in the amount of $19,250.

Mayor Ken Wesson presented a Proclamation, read by Chamber Ambassador Steven McLeroy, designating September 23 – 29, 2018, as Family Week in Childersburg. It focuses on the need to focus on a foundation of support for children through the family unit, supported by the role of involved parents,

The Council approved training expenses for Mayor Ken Wesson and Council President Pro Tempore Angie Twyman to attend the Municipal Leadership Institute on October 4th in Prattville.

Also approved was a proposal for Ray & Gilliland PC to conduct a survey of a 20-acre tract in the Industrial park, at a cost not to exceed $4,000. The longer term aim is to clear the site to create an industry-ready property to be marketed worldwide through Alabama Power.

The Council approved the transfer of a Ford Expedition from the Police Department to the Parks & Recreation Department. Also gaining approval was a proposal to convert interior lighting at the Limbaugh Community Center to LED at a cost of $13,309.98, as well as lighting at the Rescue Squad Building at a cost of $2,532.

The Council approved a $250 expenditure from LRA funds for a sponsorship advertisement with the Childersburg High School Band.

Approval was given to pay invoices in the amount of $46,736.56.

The Council approved replacement of the door and casing, as well as widening the Termite Shop door at a cost of $479.54.

Also approved was the expenditure of $3,117.33 for repairs for the emergency generator at the Limbaugh Community Center. This will maintain the Center’s certified role as an emergency shelter.

The Council approved the purchase of a used 2006 Dodge Charger for use by the Childersburg Police Investigator to replace an out-of-service vehicle. The Charger has approximately 52,000 miles of service and comes at a cost of $8,500.

During the Town Hall portion of the meeting, It was announced that the new facility for Lakeside Stone on Highway 280 will hold a Chamber Ribbon-Cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 5th at 12:20 p.m. as part of the Grand Opening celebration.

Also, First Lady Trisha Wesson has called a meeting of those wishing to join the committee to decorate Childersburg for the holiday season to be held at City Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10th.

Mayor Ken Wesson thanked New Day Ministries for last week’s special show of support for City workers, lunch served for them in Kiwanis Park, “It was greatly appreciated, got rave reviews from our personnel, while giving a real boost to morale.”

Wesson also invited the public to attend next week’s Chamber Coffee at Renasant Bank in downtown Childersburg. State Senator-elect Don Roberts and a host of other elected officials will be special guests at the affair.

The next regular meeting will be held on September 18th, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.
