Childersburg City Council meeting report – Aug. 22, 2018

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. -The Childersburg City Council met at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

The following actions were taken:

Resolution 2018-15 was approved, allowing Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood to perform engineering services for the Liberty Trail mountain bike project at Kymulga Grist Mill Park and authorizing Mayor to execute contracts on behalf of the City of Childersburg.

Approval was given to issue an ABC Retail Liquor – Class II, Package Store license to SNS Investments LLC, located at 32121 US Hwy. 280.

Travel/Training were approved for City Attorney Jerry Fielding to attend the 2018 Fall Municipal Law Conference Oct. 18 – 20, 2018 at the Orange Beach Event Center, including registration, travel, and per diem.

The Council approved payment of FOP dues for all 18 certified city police officers at a rate of $30 each, for a total of $540.

Approval was given for the Street Department Shop’s conversion of eight existing fixtures to LED at a cost of $2,532, as well as for City Hall conversion to LED Lighting at a cost of $11,612. With the current usage of 38,498 kWh per year, and a projected usage 11,817 kWh per year, it would result in an approximate reduction of 70-percent usage of electricity with a cost savings of approximately $4,699 per year. That would mean a return on the investment in only 2.4 years.

The Council approved the permanent hiring of a Sanitation Operator, Mike Wilson, as a CDL Driver at beginning rate of $9.50 per hour. Also approved was the hire of Ryan Strickland as Operations Coordinator at the Parks and Recreation Department as a permanent employee at a rate of $9.50 per hour.

A $1,000 appropriation was approved for the Tree Lighting Committee event in November.

The Council also approved the Fire Department making application for grants for both another new ambulance, as well as a new fire engine.

Approval was given to pay invoices in the amount of $112,857.02.

During the Town Hall portion of the meeting, David McCurley of Radio Alabama was introduced by Mayor Ken Wesson. McCurley will be the voice of Childersburg High School sports starting with the coming football season on the brand new Kix 100.3FM. The mayor encourages local businesses to support the effort to highlight Childersburg High athletics, as well as other aspects of the community.

The next regular meeting will be held on Sept. 4, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.
