Childersburg Baseball opens area play at home in shutout fashion over Dadeville

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Tigers have waited a month to finally play a home game at Garland Justice Field, and the results of the game against Dadeville proved that the Cats were definitely ready for the challenge.

Their first home game just happened to be their first area contest as the Dadeville Tigers came to town. The first innings saw fireworks as the visiting Cats had runners on second and third bases with two outs, but Coach Taylor Craven’s guys in blue got out of the inning without surrendering a run.

The home Cats though took advantage of their runners in the bottom of the first inning by scoring two times. The Tigers had balanced scoring all day as they tallied two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth to capture a 9-0 win and more importantly go 1-0 in the area.

The bats for the Cats were hot again. Lane Dennis was 3-3 and Jordan Mann was 3-4 on the day. The rest of the Tigers did their part with the sticks as well by getting on base by any means, moving runners around with sacrifices, and stealing bases.

The real story of the day though was pitcher Payton Tanner. The Tiger sophomore has quietly turned into the master on the mound for the Tigers.

Payton went six full innings, only giving up five hits and two walks. He also captured eight strikeouts, and most importantly, gave up no runs. Tyler Pope came in to close out Dadeville in the seventh to preserve the shutout. Tanner made two great plays at shortstop after moving from the hill in the last inning.

Coach Craven joined the Tiger Sports Network in the post game and said, “We played a complete game today and really played strong in the field and got hits when we needed them. Our batting order really complimented each other today, and I can’t say enough about Payton Tanner. He was sensational today.”

Tanner also commented on his performance and added, “I was just trying to stay ahead of each hitter and make them hit my pitch instead of falling behind and having to throw one right down the middle. My teammates are very strong behind me along with J.D. Oakes behind the plate. I know I can throw a breaking ball in the dirt and J.D. will block it up.

The Tigers look to take the series later today in Dadeville as hard throwing senior Trent Twymon will go to the hill in game two for Coach Craven and his staff.
