SYLACAUGA, Ala. – For most, the holiday season is all about spending time with friends and family and helping those in need, while remembering the reason for the season.
Last year on Christmas, Bookers BBQ in downtown Sylacauga was closed on Christmas Day. This year, it will be quiet the opposite.
“My heart and God were telling me to open up on Christmas Day,” said Owner Linda Booker.
The locally-owned restaurant will be serving free meals from 9 a.m. until noon on Christmas Day to those in need of a hot meal.
Around Christmas last year, Booker met a 12-year-old boy.
“Last year, I got temporary custody of this little boy, who’s parents didn’t want him, ” said Booker.
Little did she know, he would become a part of her family.
“I look at him everyday and see what impact I had on this little boy, ” said Booker. “This was supposed to be a temporary thing but now I have full custody of the child. I can imagine how he would be out there if nobody got him. I ride and I look and see people sitting around town and people stopping by, asking if they can get something to eat and I always give. If I have got it, I’m going to give. It always touches me.”
Like the boy, those in need will be able to enjoy a hot meal on Christmas Day.
Individuals interested in helping serve meals should contact Linda Booker or show up on Christmas morning.
