[BREAKING] Beverly steps down as Childersburg head football coach

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Tigers will feature a new head football coach in 2020.

Jonathan Beverly announced his resignation on Thursday as the Tigers’ head man after four seasons at the helm.

Beverly told RadioAlabama Sports and SylacaugaNews.com both time and distance away from his wife and two young children was the major player in his decision to step down as head coach. Beverly currently resides in metro-Birmingham.

“With the distance away from home and my two young children, it was really taking a toll,” Beverly explained. “This was a family decision. It’s been something I’ve planned on doing since the end of the football season. I did not feel I was at a place to do that until the last few days.”

Beverly will still be a familiar face around Childersburg High School. He said he still intends, for now, to teach and be a part of the staff.

“I’m at a bit of a crossroads right now to where I’ll either be at Childersburg and teach, but not coach, because we know the coaching side of things takes up so much more time,” he said. “If I do decide to be a head coach, it needs to be somewhere much closer to home. I really enjoy being at Childersburg day in and day out, but the time away from family was taking its toll.”

Beverly spoke on why it was important to make this decision now as opposed to waiting.

“I needed to be fair in my decision making to allow whoever takes over the program next to have ample time to have a good off-season.”

Beverly’s overall record at CHS was 14-27 after taking over a 2-8 program in 2016. Beverly is one of the few coaches to take the Tigers to the playoffs in recent history. In the last 23 years Childersburg has only made the postseason five times. One of those was in 2017 under Beverly’s watch.
