B.B. Comer Memorial Library launches Summer Reading Club, free programs

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The B.B. Comer Memorial Library is inviting children and teens to “Unearth a Story” this summer through its annual Summer Reading Club and a full schedule of free educational and entertainment programs.

Registration for the Summer Reading Club is now open and will continue through Friday, July 10. Children of all ages are encouraged to participate by setting reading goals and earning prizes throughout the summer. Registration is available online or in the library’s Children’s Department.

Participants may submit prize entries through Friday, July 24, with a grand prize drawing scheduled for Saturday, July 25.

In addition to reading challenges, the library will host free performances for children and teens ages 3 to 18 every Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Harry I. Brown Auditorium. The summer lineup includes science demonstrations, magic shows, live music, animal programs, juggling acts, and theatrical storytelling.

The series began on Monday, June 8 with “Dinosaurs, Reactions, and Explosions, Oh My!” presented by Jan Mattingly, known as The Science Lady. Other featured performers include Gene Cordova, Alabama Ballet, Animal Tales, Brandon Herring, and Barry Stewart Mann.

Children ages three to five can also attend weekly story times and crafts on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Programs will feature dinosaur-themed stories, patriotic activities, and take-home crafts.

No programs are scheduled during the week of Monday, June 29 through Friday, July 3, except for the July 1 Alabama Ballet performance.
