SYLACAUGA, Ala. – B.B. Comer football has reached the pinnacle of the ASWA Class 2A rankings, securing the top spot in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.
This marks the first time since 1996 that the Tigers have claimed the coveted number one spot.
The rise to the top comes on the heels of a surprising upset that saw the former #1, Fyffe, fall to Geraldine last week, 17-6. Last year, Fyffe triumphed over B.B. Comer in the Class 2A state title game, defeating them 40-28.
B.B. Comer’s last stint at number one came in 1996 when they were ranked #1 as a Class 3A team for five weeks. However, their reign was cut short by a road loss to region rival Briarwood Christian.
The 1996 squad, coached by Bobby Overton, featured standout all-state players Chris Wheeler and Wayne Long.
B.B. Comer now faces Woodland in their first region clash on Friday night, eager to maintain their newly acquired top-ranking status.
