ALDOT implements lane closure halt for holidays to help assure safe travels

SHARE NOW

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is taking proactive measures to assure safe and smooth holiday travel until the new year.

Anticipating elevated traffic volumes during the peak holiday season, ALDOT announced a temporary halt on lane closures from Friday, Dec. 22, at 6:00 p.m. until Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

While construction zones will be inactive, drivers should remain attentive as work zone materials and reduced speed limits will be present.

In light of the increased holiday traffic, ALDOT emphasized the importance of buckling up. Drive Safe Alabama coordinator Allison Green notes the life-saving significance of seat belts, citing that over 56 percent of fatalities in 2022 crashes were unrestrained individuals.

As 115 million Americans are expected to travel, ALDOT offers holiday travel tips, urging travelers to plan sober rides and check routes through ALGO Traffic for real-time updates.
