OKALOOSA CO., Fla. – Alabama high school football coach Robert Sloan Carter has been arrested in Florida on multiple felony charges, including solicitation of a sexual act with a student.
According to authorities, the 55-year-old Carter, who had been a prominent figure in Alabama high school athletics and head football coach at Clarke County High School, was taken into custody in Niceville late Friday evening on 11 warrants. Charges include soliciting sexual act with a student (three counts), school employee sexual act (four counts), and distribution of obscene material to a minor on school grounds (four counts).
Local officials have yet to release detailed information on what led to his arrest, but sources indicated that investigators had been building a case for some time. The investigation began in Grove Hill, Ala.
Clarke County High School, where Carter had been employed, issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to student safety. Administrators assured parents that campus security measures were being reinforced and that full cooperation was being given to law enforcement.
“The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority,” the district stated. “We are working closely with authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.”
According to the Okaloosa County Jail, Carter is being held without bond where he faces extradition to Clarke County. Legal proceedings will determine whether bond is granted and what potential penalties he may face if convicted.
Carter coached at Sylacauga High School during the 2021 and 2022 seasons between stints at Beauregard High School and Clarke County High School.
