MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Human Resources is implementing a new security feature designed to protect Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from electronic fraud.
Beginning Thursday, Jan. 22, all Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards issued in Alabama will automatically block out-of-state and online transactions. The system enhancement will place cards into a “Block High-Risk Transaction” status, preventing purchases at stores outside Alabama or through online retailers unless the cardholder takes action to unlock the card.
Commissioner Nancy Buckner said the change is part of ongoing efforts to combat benefit theft.
“We are extremely pleased to announce this new feature because it should curtail more of the electronic fraud that is stealing funds from eligible clients,” Buckner said. “Over the past year we have implemented a number of new security features, with the assistance of our EBT card vendor, working to ensure SNAP benefits stay in the hands of Alabama families that need them.”
In-state purchases will continue to process normally without interruption.
Cardholders who wish to make out-of-state or online purchases must unlock their cards using the ConnectEBT mobile app, the ConnectEBT website, or by calling EBT customer service.
Instructions are available on DHR’s website under the Food Assistance Division. For additional information, clients may call 1 (800) 997-8888 or visit their local county DHR office.
