MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is temporarily stopping all road work and lane closures on interstates during the festive season.
From Friday, Dec. 24 at 6:00 a.m. to Sunday, Dec. 26 at 11:59 p.m. ALDOT will suspend all lane closures to help with traffic flow throughout the state. This procedure will also be in place starting on Friday, Dec. 31 at 6:00 a.m. and going into the new year until Sunday, Jan 2 at 11:59 p.m.
This precautionary decision was made not only for the safety of drivers but also for road construction and maintenance workers.
“Give the gift of safe driving to your passengers and others on the road this holiday season,” said Allison Green, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator with ALDOT. “Safe driving begins with making sure everyone in your vehicle wears a seat belt.”
ALDOT has offered drivers three tips for safe travels during the holidays which include always fastening your seat belt, planning ahead, and driving sober.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), near-record amounts of travelers are expected on highways and interstates during Christmas time, especially due to the limitations to travel experienced last year.
