SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Earlier this month, Alabama Childhood Food Solutions (ACFS), a non-profit organization based in Sylacauga, received a $250,000 grant from The Holle Family Foundation in Birmingham to go towards a new food distribution center.

With the goal to End Hunger in Central Alabama, ACFS is planning to erect a 30,000-square foot distribution center in south Talladega County to meet some of the food insecurity problems that exist in the area.

ACFS has been serving food to kids and families in need throughout Central Alabama since 2011.

ACFS shares food with over 1,800 kids each week and gives supplemental groceries to over 800 families that are economically distressed on a monthly basis. There are 29,000 children in the Central Alabama region who may often go to bed hungry and have less than enough to eat over the weekends.

The distribution center is expected to cost $1.3 million to build. According to ACFS, it will be possible to share food with 10,000 people monthly from the new distribution center.

The new center will require several additional employees, and space will be included for meetings and classrooms. There will also be accommodations made for emergency care in the event of natural disasters.

ACFS currently operates with over 700 part-time volunteers.
