TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. – The Talladega County area chapter of Alabama A&M University’s alumni has given three scholarships to recently-graduated seniors that will be attending the school next semester.
Each year, the Talladega County area alumni chapter awards scholarships to high school seniors who will be continuing their post-secondary education at Alabama A&M University.
The following three graduates exemplified academic excellence and good citizenship as well as participated in incredibly valuable extracurricular activities.
-Troy McKinney, graduate of Winterboro High School, received a $500 scholarship
-Kiyla McNealey, graduate of Sylacauga High School, received a $500 scholarship
-Amiya Sillmon, graduate of Talladega County Central High School, received a $1,000 scholarship
McNealey received the Minnie Mallory Coleman scholarship. Mrs. Coleman graduated from Alabama A&M with a bachelor’s degree in education and went on to teach in the Talladega County School system for over 35 years.
Coleman helped integrate Childersburg Elementary School in 1967 while she taught there as she fought to have her daughter Angela permitted to attend the school.
Mrs. Coleman passed away in 2018, but before she died, Coleman gave annually to Alabama A&M. Her family and the alumni chapter created the scholarship fund in her memory.
