Aggie softball pitchers throw combined no-hitter against rival Wolves

FAYETTEVILLE, Ala. – Sylacauga Aggie pitchers Lani Varner and Lorel Bryant’s joint effort in the circle resulted in a combined no-hitter for the duo Thursday night in the Aggies’ 11-1, six inning, run rule victory over the Fayetteville Wolves.

The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Wolves answered back with a run of their own in the inning’s bottom half.

Sylacauga climbed back on top 2-1 in the second inning and plated three more runs in the third which included Madison Martin’s RBI single that scored Millicent Taylor to give the Aggies a 5-1 lead.

On to the fourth inning, the Aggies added two more runs to their tally when Mason Porch’s RBI hit scored Neeley-Scott Wilkinson.  Porch went on to score when she crossed the plate on a passed ball.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Raegan Will’s collected the Aggie’s third hit of the night as Sylacauga rounded the bases four more times in the sixth inning and held Fayetteville scoreless to end the contest with a ten run rule victory.

Lani Varner pitched a no-hitter through five innings of work while striking out ten, walking one and surrendering one run due to an error. Entering the game in the sixth inning, Lorel Bryant struck out all three batters she faced.  Scoring runs for Sylacauga were Wilkinson (2), Wills (2), Porch (2), Taylor (2), Martin (1), Kaylei Horn (1) and Brighton Clary (1).

“Lani Varner did a phenomenal job for us in the circle. I felt like she was fatigued after throwing 88 pitches, and I wanted my other pitcher, Lorel Bryant, to come in and get some work to close the game out in six innings. Both pitchers did an outstanding job for us and that’s something to build on going into area play next Tuesday against Central High School of Clay,” Head Coach Chad Wilkinson explained. “At this point in the season, it’s about building stamina in your pitchers. I’m excited about our pitching staff moving forward.”
