HOOVER, Ala. – Just days after removing himself from gubernatorial consideration, current State Auditor Jim Zeigler has confirmed he will run for Secretary of State.
The Sylacauga native made the announcement Thursday morning, Jan. 27, at the Alabama Republican Headquarters in Hoover. The building is dedicated to Bill Armistead, former State Senator and party chairman.
Zeigler (R) is currently set to run against two other candidates in the Republican primary with Ed Packard and Wes Allen also qualified. No Democratic candidates have qualified yet.
“Election integrity may be the most important single issue,” Zeigler said. “If we lose our ability to elect or defeat officials, then all other issues will have lost accountability to the people. [I] will fight against election by manipulation.”
Zeigler has served two straight terms as State Auditor; therefore, he will be leaving an open seat. The Secretary of State seat is also opening up as incumbent John Merrill has served back-to-back terms as well.
“The Secretary is our top election administrator,” said Zeigler. “We face national attempts to manipulate honest election procedures. Alabama needs a proven fighter against government overreach to be our fighting Secretary of State.”
The Republican primary is scheduled for May 24, 2022.
