AEA Selects Amy Hubbard Marlowe as Executive Director

SHARE NOW

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Education Association (AEA) Board of Directors today announces the unanimous selection of Amy Hubbard Marlowe to serve as executive director for Alabama’s largest professional association of educators.

Marlowe provided the following statement regarding her selection.

“I appreciate the vote of confidence the AEA Board has given me. There’s never been a more perilous time for Alabama educators and the media should continue to focus on their heroic efforts. With the legislative session beginning tomorrow, my attention will be focused on the Statehouse as it has been throughout my long tenure with AEA. None of us could have predicted the events of the last year, but Alabama school employees – despite having more and more added to them each day – have risen to every challenge. AEA has a long and proud history of being the advocate for Alabama’s education employees and the guardian of the Education Trust Fund. With my selection, that work will continue and the fight will begin anew tomorrow with the start of the 2021 legislative session.”

Marlowe was previously named the Interim Executive Director of the Alabama Education Association in January 2019. Prior to assuming her new role, Marlowe served as the Assistant Executive Director for AEA where she was responsible for a variety of functions in the areas of Governmental Relations, Public Relations, and Research and Technology. In addition to her duties as an AEA lobbyist, Marlowe serves as the editor of the Alabama School Journal, AEA’s official publication and the most widely read newspaper in Alabama with a circulation of over 85,000. Before joining Dr. Paul Hubbert and Dr. Joe Reed on the AEA management team, Amy served as an AEA UniServ Director where she represented local education employees at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the Sylacauga City, Talladega City and Talladega County school systems.

Marlowe received undergraduate degrees in both Political Science and Public Relations from the University of Alabama and is a 1993 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law. An Etowah County native, Amy and her husband, Steve, live in Sylacauga and are the parents of Tommy, a senior at the University of Alabama, and Grier, a sophomore at the University of Alabama.

AEA anticipates an active legislative session in the coming year and looks forward to making progress toward the Association’s ambitious goals. Marlowe’s unparalleled experience in advocating for students and educators in Montgomery will be essential as the legislative session operates within COVID-19 safety protocols. Her leadership will be pivotal, and AEA will make great progress due to her established working relationships with members of the legislature.

Since December, AEA members have been conducting meetings with local legislators to discuss education related priorities and what lies ahead in the upcoming session. The Association’s primary priority during the upcoming session is to secure a long overdue, significant pay raise for all education employees that will allow Alabama to attract and retain the best educators for our students.

“Alabama’s educators and our Association look forward to working with the legislature to ensure every Alabama student has the support they need to strive coming out of this national public health and economic crisis,” said AEA President Sherry Tucker. “We remain focused on ensuring that Alabama can attract and retain the best educators to support our students as we recover from the pandemic. We have much work to do, and AEA will continue to be the education leader making decisions about the future of Alabama’s students and our state.”
